THE DISTRICTS OF THE ATLANTA AREA COUNCIL
What is a District?
In Scouting America, a district is a geographic subdivision of a local council that provides direct support to Cub Scout packs, Scouts BSA troops, Venturing crews, and Sea Scout ships within its territory.
The Atlanta Area Council covers 13 counties in metro-Atlanta (Carroll, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Haralson, Newton, Paulding, Pickens and Rockdale), divided into 13 districts.

Core Functions of a District
Each district focuses on four core functions that help strengthen and support local Scouting units:
- Membership: Organizes new units and recruits youth and adult volunteers.
- Finance: Supports council fundraising efforts, including the annual Friends of Scouting campaign.
- Program: Supports unit activities through training, camping promotion, advancement, and recognition.
- Unit Service: Provides direct support and coaching to unit leaders through a team of volunteer commissioners.
District Leadership: The Key 3
Each district is led by three individuals who work together to coordinate and support Scouting within the district:
- District Chair: A volunteer who leads the district committee.
- District Commissioner: A volunteer who oversees unit service and supports unit health.
- District Executive: A professional Scouter who provides full-time administrative and professional support.
