VENTURING
YOUR CREW. YOUR ADVENTURE.
Venturing is a year-round program for young men and women ages 14 through 20 (or age 13 and having completed the eighth grade) that puts adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service at the center of the experience. Organized into Venturing crews, young adults pursue shared interests, take on new challenges, build meaningful friendships, and develop the skills and confidence to lead their own adventures.
Flexible Experiences That Fit Your Interests
Venturing gives you the freedom to pursue the activities and adventures that interest you most. Crews can explore everything from backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, sailing, and high-adventure treks to service, hobbies, career interests, and specialized activities. What your crew does is shaped by the interests, goals, and imagination of its members—creating an experience that is uniquely your own.
Lead the Adventure
Venturing is built around youth leadership. Crew members help choose, plan, organize, and lead their activities and adventures while adult Advisors provide guidance, mentoring, and support. Whether serving as a crew officer, organizing an expedition, coordinating a service project, or leading part of an activity, Venturers develop leadership through hands-on experience. In Venturing, leadership isn’t simply a position—it’s something you do.

Venturing Works!
Venturing challenges young adults to discover strengths, set goals, build relationships, and grow through real experiences. Alongside friends and trusted adult mentors, Venturers learn from successes and setbacks, develop talents, and gain independence. Each experience creates opportunities for personal growth while preparing Venturers to meet new challenges, pursue goals, and shape their future.

Adventure & Growth Await
Adventure is at the heart of Venturing, with experiences shaped by the interests and goals of each crew. Take on a challenging trek, climb a rock face, paddle whitewater, explore a new skill, travel somewhere new, or create an adventure together. Along the way, Venturers step beyond their comfort zones, strengthen friendships, develop new abilities, and discover just how much they can accomplish.

Leadership, Character & Service
Venturing develops leaders by giving adults opportunities to make decisions, solve problems, serve others, and turn ideas into action. Through crew leadership, adventure planning, goals, and community service, Venturers learn to collaborate, take responsibility, mentor others, and lead with purpose. Supported by Advisors, they build character and skills for college, careers, community, and lives.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Does Venturing Work?
Venturing is for young men and women, ages 14-20. Each Venturer is a member of a Crew. Crews go on camping trips, high adventure treks, play games, do service projects and learn new skills. Crews can specialize in particular types of activities or organize themselves more broadly around a sponsoring organization.
How Much Does Venturing Cost?
There are Two Types of Scouting Fees Due from Youth:
- BSA Fee.
- As of April of 2024, the BSA Fee for youth is $85 per year.
- Youth and adult leader fees are for 12 months from registration; the 12-month period for those registered before August of 2023 is the calendar year.
- Pack Fee.
- The amount of a Pack Fee will vary depending on the activities and budget of your local Pack and typically range from $40 to $85 annually, and more depending on the level of adventure activities and support that the Pack provides for a fun program.
New Youth in 2024 pay the BSA Fee and Pack Fee separately.
- BSA Fee ($85 as of April 2024) for 12 months to the BSA (online app) or AAC (paper app). (As of April 2024, there is no longer a “New Member Joining Fee”.)
- The Pack Fee is paid to the Pack separately on the Pack’s Timetable.
Question: What About Adult Leaders? Do they pay BSA Fees? How?
Answer: Yes, Adult Leaders must pay BSA Fee ($65 as of April 2024) for 12 months to the BSA, but registration is free if the adult is also registered in a Troop. Packs deal with Adult Leader BSA Fees in different ways:
- Many Packs “cover” the Adult Leader’s BSA Fee, either by reimbursement out of the Pack budget (Pack Fees) or (for Adult Leaders returning from last year) by Pack payment to the BSA.
- In some Packs, each Adult Leader covers their own BSA Fee.
Question: What About Fundraising? We used Popcorn to Pay All or Most of our BSA Fees for the next year!
Answer: While Unit Fundraising can still be applied to cover Pack Fees for all, Unit Fundraising can’t be directly applied to cover BSA Fees for “next year” for New Youth or for returning Youth if the Pack elects the “Self-Pay” route for BSA Fees.
- If Unit Fundraising is high enough to cover all or part of BSA Fees, Units would need to rebate those families who paid BSA Fees directly.
Is Venturing in My Neighborhood?
Absolutely! There are tons of organizations in neighborhoods throughout the Atlanta area that sponsor Venturing Crews. Venturers meet at service organizations, places of worship, schools, and more, all within a comfortable distance to your home. To find a Crew near you, visit BeAScout.org, enter your zip code, select “Venturing”, and get immediate information about Troops near you, or give us a call at 770-989-8820.
Who Will Lead The Crew?
Youth lead their crews – Venturing develops young people as leaders, advised by Adult advisors.
Adults will have the opportunity to take a role in supporting your Venturer’s experience as a Crew Advisor or Assistant or Committee Member or helper - and we're here to help you become the best leader you can be with training, online resources, and support from our Program Center.
Every volunteer leader is required to go through a rigorous background check and Youth Protection Training process that ensures your child will be in a safe and fun program. The Atlanta Area Council provides many training opportunities for our leaders to enhance the program they deliver, and increase the skills they can pass onto our Scouts.
