DUTY TO GOD

A Scout is Reverent

Duty to God is an important part of the Scouting experience, encouraging young people to explore their beliefs, strengthen their character, and put their values into action through service to others.

The Atlanta Area Council supports Scouts, families, unit leaders, and faith communities with resources for religious emblems, Scouting days of worship, and opportunities for spiritual leadership.

Celebrate Scouting with Your Faith Community

Scout Sunday, Scout Sabbath, and Scout Jumuah provide opportunities for faith communities to recognize Scouts and adult volunteers, celebrate service, and strengthen relationships with local Scouting units. Each observance offers a meaningful way to recognize the shared values of Scouting and faith communities.

Scout Sunday

Traditionally observed on the Sunday preceding February 8, Scouting America's anniversary, Scout Sunday recognizes the contributions of Scouts and adult volunteers within their congregations. Faith communities may choose an alternate date that best fits their worship calendar.

Scout Sabbath

Scout Sabbath provides Jewish congregations an opportunity to recognize Scouts and Scouters, celebrate their accomplishments, and highlight the values shared by Scouting and their faith communities.

Scout Jumuah

Scout Jumuah offers Muslim communities an opportunity to recognize Scouts and adult volunteers, celebrate their achievements, and encourage youth participation in Scouting.

Religious Emblems & Awards

Religious emblems programs encourage Scouts to deepen their understanding of their faith, explore its teachings, and develop a stronger commitment to living by its values. These programs are developed and administered by individual religious organizations, with recognized emblems authorized for wear on the Scouting America uniform.

Requirements vary by faith tradition and age group. Families and unit leaders should consult the appropriate religious organization for current program materials, eligibility, and recognition procedures.

Atlanta Area Council Duty to God Award

The Atlanta Area Council Duty to God Award recognizes contributions that strengthen the relationship between Scouting and faith communities. Learn more about the award, its eligibility requirements, and the recognition process through the Council's award information and application materials.

Chaplain & Chaplain Aide Resources

Chaplains and chaplain aides play an important role in supporting the spiritual development of Scouts. Through encouragement, mentorship, reflection, and service, they help young people explore the values expressed in the Scout Oath and Scout Law.

These leadership opportunities support the spiritual life of a Scouting unit while respecting the diverse religious traditions represented among its members.

The Duty to God Handbook offers guidance for chaplains, chaplain aides, and unit leaders who support spiritual development through Scouting.
