More Than 75 Years of Scouting on Lake Allatoona
Scouting's connection to Lake Allatoona began almost as soon as the lake itself was completed. In 1951, the Atlanta Area Council obtained a lease from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 188 acres of undeveloped land to serve as a rustic camp for the Explorer program. The property expanded to 526 acres in 1956 and began serving as an overflow summer camp, with campsites and facilities gradually added over the following decades. After a tornado caused widespread damage in 1974, much of the camp was rebuilt and improved with a ranger residence, new well, and graded road.
A new chapter began in 1988 when the Council expanded the property's role through specialized aquatics programs and training opportunities. A floating dock, boat ramp, boat shed, and large pavilion were added in 1992, helping transform the rustic camp into today's Allatoona Aquatics Base. More than 75 years after Scouts first began camping along its shoreline, Allatoona continues to provide a distinctive lakefront setting for camping, aquatics, training, and outdoor Scouting experiences.
