CAMPMASTER CORPS

Helping Every Weekend at Camp Run Smoothly

The Atlanta Area Council Campmaster Corps is a dedicated group of experienced Scouters who support weekend camping activities at Bert Adams Scout Camp, Woodruff Scout Camp, and Allatoona Aquatics Base.

Campmasters bring valuable experience in Scouting outdoor programs, the patrol method, unit operations, and the aims and objectives of Scouting. Their presence helps ensure that visiting units have the support, resources, and guidance they need for a successful camping experience.

What Does a Campmaster Do?

Campmasters serve as a welcoming and helpful presence throughout the weekend. They visit campsites and program facilities, assist unit leaders, support Camp Rangers, and help maintain a safe and well-organized camping environment.

During a typical weekend, Campmasters:

  • Welcome units to camp, assist with check-in, and collect unit rosters.
  • Provide commissioner-style service and assistance to unit leaders.
  • Support Camp Rangers with special projects when requested.
  • Help ensure camp policies are followed by visiting campsites and facilities throughout the weekend.
  • Offer guidance on outdoor programs, activities, and camp facilities to enhance the camping experience.
  • Assist Camp Rangers and units during emergency situations.
  • Help units complete the check-out process at the end of their stay.

A Weekend of Service at Camp

Campmasters typically arrive on Friday and conclude their service around noon on Sunday, after visiting units have departed or when released by the Camp Ranger.

During their stay, Campmasters are provided accommodations in a comfortable cabin with basic amenities, including a kitchen, cooking utensils, private bathrooms, and beds.

Volunteers can request preferred weekends and determine how frequently they would like to serve. Some Campmasters also serve together as husband-and-wife teams, making the experience an opportunity to volunteer alongside a spouse.

Who Can Become a Campmaster?

The Campmaster Corps welcomes experienced, registered adult Scouting volunteers who have a strong understanding of outdoor programs, unit operations, and camp safety.

Prospective Campmasters should have knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • Scouting outdoor programs across multiple program levels.
  • The Guide to Safe Scouting and established camp safety practices.
  • Outdoor skills and camping techniques.
  • Specialized knowledge in nature, outdoor activities, or other Scouting programs.
  • Communicating camp policies and safety expectations with unit leaders.
  • Regularly visiting campsites and camp facilities to provide assistance and monitor conditions.
